Maskne and Breakouts From Face Masks: Causes and Simple Fixes

Must Read

Face masks protect from infection, but they can be rough on skin. “Maskne” (mask acne) happens because of friction, trapped sweat, humidity and sometimes leftover makeup under the mask.

When the area around your nose, mouth and chin stays warm and moist for hours, pores can clog more easily. Bacteria thrive, and friction rubs on the same spots repeatedly, leading to red bumps, whiteheads or painful pimples.

A few simple tweaks can help. First, keep the skin under your mask as simple as possible. Heavy foundation or thick creams under a mask often cause more clogging. Use a light, non-comedogenic moisturiser and sunscreen, and skip base makeup on covered areas when you can.

Choose masks that fit well but aren’t brutally tight. Soft, breathable layers are better than rough materials. If you’re using reusable cloth masks, wash them daily with mild, fragrance-free detergent and rinse thoroughly so no residue remains.

After long mask use, gently cleanse your face and apply a calming moisturiser. If you’re acne-prone, products with salicylic acid or niacinamide (used correctly) can help keep pores clearer.

If breakouts become severe, persistent, or leave marks, it’s worth seeing a dermatologist. Mask use may be non-negotiable, but maskne usually can be controlled with a bit of strategy.
